सस्य विज्ञान — एग्रोनामी शब्द का अर्थ ( Meaning of the word Agronomy )
सस्य विज्ञान — एग्रोनामी ( Agronomy ) शब्द की उत्पत्ति लैटिन भाषा के एग्रोनोमस ( Agronomos ) शब्द से हुई है ।
एग्रोनोमोस शब्द दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है — एग्रो और नोमोस ; अर्थात् Agronomos = Agr0 + nomoS यहाँ एग्रो ( Agro ) शब्द का अर्थ खेत और नोमोस ( nomos ) शब्द का अर्थ प्रबन्ध से है ।
सस्य विज्ञान क्या है ( What is Agronomy )
इस प्रकार सामान्यतः भूमि का उचित प्रबन्ध कर वैज्ञानिक विधि से फसलों को उगाने का अध्ययन सस्य विज्ञान ( Agronomy ) कहलाता है ।

सस्य विज्ञान की परिभाषा ( Definition of Agronomy )
“ सस्य विज्ञान कृषि की वह शाखा है , जो फसल उत्पादन और मृदा प्रबन्ध के सिद्धान्तों व क्रियाओं से सम्बन्ध रखती है । “
“ Agronomy is that branch of agriculture , which deals with the principles and practice of crop production and field management . “
“ सस्य विज्ञान फसल उगाने की एक ऐसी कला एवं विज्ञान है , जिसके अन्तर्गत भूमि का वैज्ञानिक ढंग से प्रबन्ध कर फसलों को उगाने का प्रयत्न किया जाता है । जिसके फलस्वरूप भूमि , जल व प्रकाश की प्रति इकाई से तथा कम श्रम व खर्च के साथ — साथ भूमि की उर्वरा शक्ति को बनाये रखकर अधिकतम उत्पादन किया जाता है । “
“ Agronomy is the art and science of field crop culture , which includes the art and science of handling the crop plants and soil material as to produce the highest possible quality and quantity of the desired crop product from each unit of soil , water and light with a minimum immediate of future expenses in labour and soil fertility . “
